Southam Twinning Association

Southam Twinning Association started in 1991. It was a Council initiative, enabling a link between Marolles en Hurepoix, a town 25 miles to the south of Paris, and Southam. Both are towns of approximately the same size (4,500 and 6,500), and neighbouring on much larger towns, and so there are common themes between them.

Mike Hill has been the Chair of the Association since 2007, and remains as such. Since the association started, there have been yearly visits between the towns, alternating between France and England. Those on both sides of the channel have enjoyed these visits very much, the last one having been in May (2015) when’ us Southam lot’ visited Marolles. A great time was had by all.

At Mike Hill’s instigation, and as a consequence of a letter written by him to the Mayor, it has been highlighted that the twinning association members are getting older and that numbers in the association are lessening. It is now recognised that we need an influx of new members in order to maintain the wonderful links that we have developed with Marolles. This could well mean some change – not only doing exchange visits between French and English families, but also possibly developing links between schools ,sporting groups and businesses. We have already decided to approach Southam School language department as to possible school links, and exchanges between pupils.

It is so important in our view that Southam has the continued vision to realise the need for friendship between ourselves and our French neighbours, and Europe. If we were to lose this link due to lack of interest, it would be a sad loss for the town.

The association can be contacted through Mike Hill on 01926 814144), and for those who want to know more about the association, please see our website:
